A Three-Year STEM Pathway to A Level SuccessProviding a Strong Academic Foundation for Future Success

Programme Overview

AL+ is our enhanced three-year A-Level pathway designed for students who would benefit from a purposeful transition into the academic and language demands of Sixth Form, providing a full A level experience over 3 years.

The programme is distinctly STEM-focused. Students select three subjects from a specialist suite, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, giving them a clear, ambitious pathway into high-demand fields and competitive university courses.

Strong academic English is essential for success in A-Level study, particularly within a STEM-focused pathway. At Charterhouse Malaysia, we provide a high level of personalised English

support to ensure every student can fully access the curriculum and express their understanding with clarity and precision.

Overview

Students on the AL+ pathway benefit from:

Targeted English instruction designed to strengthen academic vocabulary, analytical writing and subject-specific language.

Integrated language development within STEM subjects, helping students master the terminology and communication skills required for scientific reasoning, problem-solving and extended writing.

Small-group and individual support, enabling teachers to work closely with students on the specific areas they need to develop.

Continuous language assessment and feedback, ensuring progress is monitored carefully and support evolves as students advance through the programme.

Our approach reflects the Charterhouse belief that academic excellence and strong communication skills go hand in hand. With the right guidance, students not only meet the linguistic demands of A-Level but gain the confidence to participate fully in discussions, present ideas thoughtfully and engage with complex academic texts.

Rooted in Charterhouse’s tradition of scholarly ambition and shaped by our Future Ready Learning philosophy, AL+ provides the time, structure and guidance students need to excel.

Alongside this, the programme integrates our Future Ready Learning framework, ensuring that students develop the Human Intelligence Markers that define a Charterhouse education: critical thinking, adaptability, collaboration, creativity and personal responsibility. These skills are woven through every lesson, project and experience, preparing students not only for A-Level, but for life beyond school.

AL+ follows a three-year progression model that combines A Level subject learning with English development, study skills, and independent research projects.

Each year has a clear focus:

Year 1: Foundations – Building core subject and academic English skills

Year 2: Expansion – Deepening understanding and preparing for formal assessments

Year 3: Mastery – Completing A Levels with confidence and readiness for university

Key Features of the AL+

Modular Assessment and Flexible Progression

The programme follows the Pearson International A Level structure, allowing students to take exams in separate modules (“units”) rather than one large final exam.

Students can bank their best unit scores and retake units to improve.

Multiple exam sessions each year (October, January, June) provide flexibility and reduce exam pressure.

This structure allows EAL students more time to adjust and demonstrate their true ability.

Structured English Support

English development is integrated throughout the course.

Year 1: Academic English foundations (CEFR B1+/B2)
Year 2: IELTS bridging and academic writing (CEFR B2→C1)
Year 3: Mastery and IELTS 7.5+ target (CEFR C1+)

Lessons include academic reading, extended writing, debate, and presentation skills — all designed to build confidence and fluency.

Inquiry-Based and Application-Focused Learning

Teaching across all subjects encourages students to:

This approach reflects the Charterhouse Malaysia vision of education that is Future Ready by Design.

Future Ready Citizenship (FRC)

Students take part in activities and discussions that build global awareness, leadership, and empathy. Through FRC, they learn to connect academic learning with community impact, preparing them to be thoughtful, responsible citizens.

Sports and Wellbeing

Students can choose from a variety of sports led by specialist coaches, including Football, Volleyball, Padel, Badminton, and Basketball. Physical education promotes teamwork, self-discipline, and personal wellbeing — key to a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Pathways and Progression

The AL+ Programme leads directly into full A Level qualification and university preparation.

Pearson International A Levels are recognised by universities worldwide, including those in the UK, USA, Australia, and beyond.
The three-year structure ensures every student develops the academic and linguistic confidence to achieve their highest potential, building a strong foundation for lifelong learning and success.
